Twitter Unveils its Tweet Button and Partners with TweetMeme

16.08.2010

Above you can see Twitter’s official Tweet button, which was launched by the chirpy company last week. Now it’s available to all internet users, offering a one-click sharing service that can be easily added to websites. Although the guys at Twitter are pretty late at this, as lots of third-party developers, have been making such features for them for quite a while, this one is official, and it resembles Facebook’s official “Like” button which seems to be gaining popularity. This new Tweet button can be easily placed anywhere on a website by copypasting the code to the website’s HTML wherever you want the button to appear. Having this button integrated into your web site will enable all your visitors to bookmark content and share it with their fellow Twitter users.

Now Twitter users will have to log in only once during a browsing session. After clicking the Tweet button, there appears a pop-up page that will have the blog/page title and custom short URL in Update box. You can also add a short piece of accompanying text, like "Hey, read this cool stuff", and then hit the Tweet button on that pop-up page in order to share it with your followers.

So Twitter is obviously trying to catch up here with Facebook and Google, as Facebook recently released an official suite plugins for website owners, and Google Buzz rolled out its own, official buttons, too! Not to mention such resources as Delicious.com and StumbleUpon who now offer a whole bunch of buttons, toolbars and other tools. And we should admit that in their effort to enhance Twitter’s usability and shareability the company is doing very well.

Even mobile interaction with Twitter is now becoming easier than ever. The micro-blogging giant has made it possible for non-Twitter users to follow accounts of their choice via SMS. Called Fast Follow, the service was introduced along with a couple of other mobile facilitation functions such as SMS alerts or latest Tweet SMS access.

The other day Twitter announced to partner with UK-based Tweetmeme in its official sharing button adventure. Tweetmeme’s CEO, Nick Halsteadm stated that this deal is not about money, it is about providing better service offerings. "We will be assisting Twitter with the technical challenges involved with the button and secondly we will be working even more closely in the future on delivering real-time curation of the Twitter Firehose. This will manifest itself in the launch of a number of new products and the first of these is being unveiled today", he said. On its official blog Twitter says, “We’re pleased to be working closely with the good folks at TweetMeme and, from here on out, they will be pointing to the Twitter Tweet Button.”
