Optimise Your Social Strategy for the Holidays

24.10.2011

We have discussed the “Christmas creep” before, the phenomenon by which preparing (and shopping) for the holiday season gets progressively earlier. There’s not much more “creep” left, however: Black Friday and Cyber Monday are fast approaching. Social media can play an important role in your holiday sales. What can you do to optimise social tools and get shoppers in the spending spirit?

Get your content in order. It is easy to put off loading new content during the hectic holiday season. To combat this, make sure you have a stockpile of appropriate posts, whether for Twitter, Facebook, or your blog. People will be searching for “best gift” type content, as well as holiday food and décor tips. If this ties in with your business (and it can if you are in retail or another B2C industry), then take advantage and tie these topics in with your unique brand.

Make sure to add social sharing buttons. Make it easy for visitors and consumers to like, follow, or +1 you and create a Facebook “thank you” page where you also share coupons, discounts, and deals.

Give. This is one of the most frequently sited tips when it comes to optimising for holidays. Giving to your customers via free shipping, deals, discounts, and coupons is always a good idea, but it is also important that you use social media to showcase what you are giving back to the community this season. It may be helping with a fundraiser, organizing a food drive, donating items to charity, or volunteering with a charity. Whatever it is, share it with your online community of followers.

Get ready; shoppers are increasingly social. You have to be there to open the doors for them on Black Friday.
