Google’s New Indexing System Now Live

11.06.2010

Google is announcing the completion of its Caffeine Project (Google’s new indexing system). Caffeine, according to Google’s official blog, will provide 50 percent fresher results for searchers than its former index. No matter what you are searching for, a blog, a forum thread or video content, you’ll get links to relevant content much sooner than it used to be before. Google Caffeine is now the largest web content collection Google has ever offered.

Google’s old index system comprised several layers, each of them being updated at a different rate – the main layer would refresh every couple of weeks. This meant that content was not included in Google’s search data base until a layer was updated, which caused a considerable delay between publishing content and having it show up in SERPs.

Caffeine analyzes web in small portions continuously updating its search index on a global scale. The new indexing system is so powerful that it processes hundreds of thousands of pages every second in parallel. Caffeine uses about 100 million gigabytes of storage and contributes new information at a rate of hundreds of thousands of gigabytes per day - this is indeed a groundbreaking state-of-the-art way to index web pages. “If this were a pile of paper it would grow three miles taller every second,” says software engineer Carrie Grimes in Google’s official blog.

"We've built Caffeine with the future in mind. Not only is it fresher, it's a robust foundation that makes it possible for us to build an even faster and comprehensive search engine that scales with the growth of information online, and delivers even more relevant search results to you," said Mr Grimes.

So, Caffeine has gone live and is now being used by all Google searchers, and if you are among them you may start noticing different search results, hopefully fresher and more relevant news and blog posts.
If you are an online marketer, employing SEO techniques in order to be favourably ranked by Google, keep in mind that Caffeine may affect you. No one knows how it is going to affect you, but it’s clear that something that affects search engine results cannot but affect the practice of SEO.
